Electronic Card Access

KU Cards can be programmed to allow access to buildings or rooms equipped with electronic card access control. If you need a new KUID card, visit the KU Card Center.

Submit an online Work Request in Maximo if you need access to a building or interior space.

Accessing Buildings and Spaces

Buildings and interior spaces have one of two types of electronic access control devices:

  • Card reader requiring a magstripe swipe.
  • Device that can be operated either by magstripe swipe or by proximity chip sensing.

NOTE: KU Cards issued prior to 2017 may not be equipped with a proximity chip and must use the swipe option.

Card Reader Operation

Card readers typically display a green indicator light when the door is unlocked, and a red indicator light when it is locked. If the door is unlocked/light is green, the door may be opened without presenting credentials. If the door is locked/light is red, presenting a properly programmed KU Card to the reader will briefly change the light to green and allow the door to be opened. It will return to the locked/red light state after approximately 8 seconds.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter a card reader malfunction or your KU Card does not work at a location where you expect it to, please submit an online Work Request in Maximo.
